Recently, I heard the replay of my conversation with Kathi Lipp on her podcast where we talked about asking for prayer and I wanted to invite you to join us! Welcome if you’re visiting from Kathi’s page. I’m so glad you’re here! I would love to pray for you today, and have us all pray for each other. I’m also giving away my new favorite prayer journal. Keep reading to find out more.
It was supposed to be a prayer request, but my email started out more like an apology. I needed friends to pray, yet I was hesitant to ask. I didn’t want my burdens to burden them.
They already had so many problems of their own: illnesses, a job loss, death of a loved one, relationship strains, overwhelming stress, and overloaded schedules.
I questioned whether my need rated high enough on the urgency “Richter scale.”
Was it really bad enough to ask for prayer, or should I wait to see how things turned out?
The first sentence in my email went something like this: “I hate to add to your list of burdens, but I need prayer for JJ.”
A few years ago, my husband had a routine check-up and blood test results that caused his doctor to be concerned about his liver, which led to a biopsy that week. We didn’t know whether it would be anything serious in the end. I just knew I didn’t want to walk through it alone in fear, denial, or my own strength.
Within fifteen minutes of me hitting “send,” friends who were on their computers started telling me they were praying. And not only did they pray, they thanked me for sharing what was going on and for letting them be there for me.
One friend shared how someone she knew had been through a similar situation. Another asked questions and made some great suggestions. Then another cracked a funny joke that made me laugh, which I really needed to do!
The night before we went to the hospital, my friend Amy sent an email saying, “I’ve been lifting prayers heavenward for your family since your last email. Know that you’ll be in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow. Let us know as soon as you hear results. We’re all in this with you, friend.”
As I read her last sentence, I could almost feel the softness of her hands gently squeeze my shoulders and hear her saying, “We’re all in this with you, friend.”
And then it hit me, what if I had not shared our need?
I would’ve missed the comfort of having friends “with me” and peace that came through the power of their prayers.
They would’ve missed out on a chance to be the “body of Christ” by guarding our hearts and minds with God’s promises and the power of prayer. And they would have missed being part of what God was doing, the joy that came when medical tests went well, and the recovery that was quick. And as we waited that week for biopsy results that ended up coming back normal, their prayers and God’s peace were constant companions.
Are you are carrying a burden today? Don’t listen to doubts that make you question the validity of your need. Even if, like me, you hate to impose on others.
Asking for prayer isn’t about putting burdens on our friends.
It’s about letting them walk by our side down a path we were
never intended to walk alone.
Lord, thank You for never seeing my prayers as a burden. Help me remember the power and purpose of prayer in my life and in my friendships.
Let’s walk together and carry each other’s burdens this week by sharing a prayer request and praying for each other in the comments by clicking “Share Your Thoughts.” I’ll be praying for each of you! Praying for all who are struggling and please keep my Mom in your prayers we are going through the journey of Alzheimers and I am truly struggling to cope and deal with it. Thank you and God Bless
Stacey Headlee says
I am struggling right now, and I confess I won’t ask for prayers except for one close friend for I am struggling with depression, and inward/outward anger. Maybe it is menopause, maybe its pride, maybe that the last two years have been such a struggle that I am slowly losing my mind. All, I know is this: I WANT OUT OF THIS PIT!!! I am afraid tomorrow I will go in and find I am fired for losing my temper at a co-worker just because he wasn’t doing things my way. (pride). Sometimes, I wonder about myself. I never doubt God is holy and righteous, but I haven’t been close t o either. I am finally putting to rest a sexual sin that I have been in and justifying. After all doesn’t the worst animal deserve to feel love? Well it wasn’t love on his part, but God loves me and can’t that be enough? God please change me from judgmental to encouraging, from demanding to asking, for strength to end this trial on solid rock, instead of my sinking further into my mire and mud. Forgive me Lord, Help me see nothing but good in everything you have made. In Jesus name Amen. Also, for those who are battling health conditions, bring your sweet whisper to their ears. In Jesus name Amen!
Susan Noble says
Stacey I will be praying for you depression is something I am familiar with. May the Lord help you throught your struggles for you are stronger than you think and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Kathy Zachary says
Thank you. I needed to hear this. I feel so vulnerable when I open up to others and ask for prayers. Even though I am always willing to help others and pray for others, I am such a private person that I use to keep everything about me and my needs inside of me. I am learning to ask for prayers and that I have many friends that want to help me but they have never known of my needs.
Thank you for your devotionals.

I like this:
Asking for prayer [ ] is about letting them walk by our side down a path we were never intended to walk alone.
My brother use to tell me I don’t believe in prayer when I said I would pray for him. I would answer back, I do. I wondered what I could say to friends, acquaintances or strangers. I found an answer.
Now I can say to friends that even though they do not believe in prayer I do. I cannot be with them in person but I feel like I am walking with them on their journey when I am praying.
Christie says
I dont know why but I always feel guilty asking for prayers for myself, but not others. I really need to break that cycle, I can say this on here but honestly I have never told anyone that before. I have a chronic illness so I deal with everyday issues so I figure people may get tired of hearing it. There’s no cure, but I believe God can do anything! Praise him!!
A. Conley says
I have sent prayers up to Heaven for all who are needing them. No one should feel as it they are alone or a burden we all share a Christian Heart. Whether your are praying for someone or asking for prayers for your situation know that you are never alone. God hears every prayer no matter who is praying.
We all struggle with so much that life is over whelming at times. People may have health issues for themselves, family member or friend, relationship struggles, financial, jobs, life changing events.
We need to be united in prayer no only for ourselves, family and friends but for this Nation.
God knows our trials and struggles most important he knows your heart.
God will make a way when there seems to be no way.

I believe it is so very important for me to realize that I AM SO VERY IMPORTANTIN GD’S EYES OF PRAYER that I can pray for myself to live, learn, love and/or care about someone else. And, I know my Awesome GOD loves everyone I pray about also. EVERYONE IN THIS OL’ WORLD IS VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR LORD. and now I know that burdens even bring myself and others closer/
It is okay to have “burdens” that we need help with.
Hey Kelly, I pray for you right now that you feel validated, and strong…to pray for yourself, and for others. Begin with “little steps- make little lists and then make each list alittle longer for yourself, and for others of what to pray about.” I know you can do it!! God does too!!
Kelly says
Thank you for this post, it is timely for me right now given that God has me on a journey right now. And it is hard to some times ask others to pray for me when I have asked them to pray for mom. Not that I can’t ask for more than one thing for them to pray about for me. I have struggled with pray myself for so many years thinking that GOD would answer someone else’s prayers before mine. I want to learn to do better with my prayer life. Thank you for post.
Kris says
Charlotte, I was also going to ask for prayer to help me begin my day with the Lord. I will be praying for you as I am struggling alongside you on this. And I pray that our glorious Lord would surround you in His love both by his Holy Spirit but also through the hands and feet of Christians, His body, in your area. That he would bring godly relationships into your life who can love and support you. And if it is his will that one of those relationships might be a godly man who will walk alongside you as you serve Him.
I am asking for prayers for self-discipline and a hunger and thirst for God. I have been struggling spiritually for a few years and have been trying to be more consistent with a quiet time in the mornings again, but just feel so dry. Also, my husband and I have a business that has been our livelihood for the past 12 years and due to changes in healthcare and restructuring we have lost almost all our clients. Please pray for work to come our way, and if it doesn’t that we will know where to go find work. I have basically been a SAHM for the last 30 years except the little time it took to take care of the books, etc. My last daughter will be a senior in high school next year. I would love to be able to make it until she goes to college, but I don’t know if that is what the Lord has in store. Also, please pray that my husband and I will grow closer through this and find ways to work together instead of attacking each other. Thank you!
Susan G says
I so agree we need a good friend (or friends!) to go to when we need prayer. I am strengthened, encouraged and comforted when my dear friend agrees to go to the Father for me, and with me. And I don’t know of anything more important that I can offer someone in need, than prayer.
Thank you for this!
Tammy says
Thank you for sharing:)
You hit the nail on the head. I often felt like I shouldn’t ask for prayer because I don’t like to bother people:)
I needed this.

Margaret, I come along side of you and stand in agreement that you will find a renewed sense of purpose. Lord touch my sisters body so she can walk in the calling you have placed on her life. I lift her husband to you Father, we know that you can give him the peace of mind too deal with anything he may have to deal with. Father if retirement is your will let him trust you to provide the financial support he needs to care for his family.
I am asking for prayer to start spending daily quiet time in prayer and bible study. I have no friends to hold me accountable, I really have no friends. I lost my husband in 1999 and haven’t been in a relationship since than. The only place I go is church and home; please pray the Lord would send me the man of God that he has for me or some healthy relationships so I’m not alone. Thank you.

I am dealing with chronic pain that medication doesn’t touch. I have a cervical epidural tomorrow morning and am supposed to get a back brace any day now. Colleen, I will be praying for your medical situation and for your husband. Depression and job loss are tough things to deal with, speaking from experience. I will gladly lift you up in prayer.
Colleen Hood says
Fran, I also just moved to a new community. Since moving I have been diagnosed with lymphoma, had 4 infusion treatments, my husband lost his job (part of the reason we moved here), we’ve had to move in with our daughter and family, and my husband is now in a deep depression. Two wonderful women have befriended me and are praying for us plus meeting with me each week. It sounds like God is blessing both of us with new friendships during challenging times! I will also pray for you and your husband. We aren’t supposed to walk through life alone. Blessings to you!
Barbara says
Thank you for this. I too find it hard to ask others to prat for me as I often do for them. @Susan, I pray with you that you find a renewed purpose and for your husband as he makes life changing decisions/transition in his career.
Please also pray for me as I lost my job March 31st and am trusting God as I seek employment. I’m trusting God that this one opportunity comes through. And if it doesn’t, I know he has something else for me. And that he continues to give me peace and all of my needs are met. Thanks.
Adonica Budd says
I find it hard to request prayer from others, because of constant criticism or they don’t think it is a big enough concern to them. I am ready to walk away from a 27 year marriage because of many issues, but it isn’t important enough for others to pray about.
Anita says
I will pray for you, Adonica, that He will bring you strength and comfort and guidance, and a new awareness of His presence in your life.
Anita says
Also, that you will find a real-life friend who will pray for you and show you that you ARE important.
Fran Patterson says
I just moved to a new community. I met a lovely Christian woman and had only seen her two times when I
needed to be covered in prayer. The Lord put it on my heart to call her and ask her to pray for my needs.
I did hesitate, but followed the spirits leading. She was very gracious and loving when i called her. She very
graciously took my requests to God… Know it will be the beginning of a wonderful ” new sister in Christ “relationship.

I often have a hard time reaching out to others on behalf of myself or our family’s “sticky issues” (the ones that I’d rather no one even know about). Yet, I’ve learned the power of “me too” SO many times and have found that when I let my guard down enough to be vulnerable with my prayer requests and burdens, so many other friends start sharing theirs, as well. In addition, we can all learn and GROW from what we’ve all been through, which is part of why I think God lets us endure certain seasons~ to be a help to someone else. Even so, I still find myself holding back on sharing my requests at times, so this post was perfect timing for my heart! Thank you!!
Susan says
Margaret,
Praying for you and your family in the sudden loss of your sister. May you all find comfort and strength in the Lord during this sad time.
Please pray for me. I need to find a renewed sense of purpose. My husband is going through major changes in his work (possible retirement) and I have an autoimmune disease which makes life challenging.

Praying for Thomas. Prayers for perseverance, relief from the pain, wisdom for the doctors and a speedy return to full health including all of the activities for a 21 year old.
Please pray for my family, as we found out this morning that my sister passed away. She has been in poor health for a while but it still is a shock. Pray for my sisters who will be traveling in for the funeral.
Anita says
What a timely post! I am always happy to pray for others, but often don’t ask myself, I don’t know why! Please pray for my son Thomas, age 21, who has been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. He’s on lots of meds trying to get into remission, but he’s felt bad for six months now and still isn’t feeling better. I worry that he will get discouraged, but he’s got a very good attitude about it. It’s hard being a 21 year old, just starting out into adult life, and having to deal with a painful disease. Thanks to all.

I have sure felt this way many times. Thanks for sharing this. I would like to request prayer for my 18 yr. old daughter who is doing drugs and thinks its okay, Has a boyfriend who is not good for her and just walking down a rebellious road. SO hard to stand by and watch but I know I cannot control her. This is God’s battle and He is only one who can change her heart. Trusting God! He is able.
Carol says
Dear Kim,
I to had an 18 yr old daughter who thought it was ok to do drugs. I prayed for a few years continuously for my sweet daughter and the Lord heard my pleas. He provided her with a year in prison which turned her life around. I am still so grateful that He is in control and not us because who has the mind of God and who can turn all the ugliness into something beautiful. I will be praying for you and your daughter and please know through this hard time there is always hope in our Lord.

@Karen…I am praying that you will feel & know the Love of God so deeply it will change you (as it is changing me!?) so that you will just naturally bring that love with you everywhere you go!

Letting others pray for us is another way to glorify God. They get to see His miraculous work and rejoice with you when the prayer is answered. I’m making my way through Fervent by Priscilla Shirer. Great book.
I also need prayers for my son, David, who is also a pastor. He has been suffering with crippling fatigue and other symptoms. He gets the blood tests back today. I’m relying heavily on God because I have no faith in his doctors. (David plans on switching doctors) God gets us through it and is always faithful. Thanks.

My prayer request is for the removal of pain that a previous job caused me, my family, and my friends. I have not been able to put it past me and the anger I feel is blocking me in many areas of my life. Lord, please deliver me from this despair.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I need prayers for grandson, He has a mental problem. He doesn’t want to take his meds and gets angry. Was in dean’s office today. Could get out of school suspension if he doesn’t hang in there these last couple of days which could cause him to lose all his credits. It’s a no win cycle. He really gets frustrated and sees no reason to keep going which just makes things worse. Prayer is my only hope and can use all the prayer warriors we can get.

Thank you Renee for sharing. I love your devotions. This one hit home as I am dealing with family issues with a sister that I am not sure how to handle. Its easy to not say anything because of what others might think. I needed this today. Praying good results for your husband and peace for your family. God Bless
Genia Horton says
It seems like when it comes to asking for prayer, I feel the same as was mentioned in this article. I don’t want to burden others, or feel like my need is that important, but I’m totally missing it by that kind of thinking. We need each other in the body of Christ and esp. when life is becoming difficult and scarry. I count it a privilege to pray for others, but hesitant to ask for myself. I need to be more dependent on my Christian family to come along side of me. I have a strained relationship with a mother who betrayed me. I continue to seek forgiveness for her and ask God to please remove the hurt and heal the relationship. I know He is working, because I’ve made a commitment to contact her at least once a week just to honor her and hear her voice, in spite of not much change. God is changing me and I was on my knees this morning seeking the same requests from Him. He knows and hears.
I want to ask God in His grace and mercy to sustain this sister who has serious cancer to keep her pain free and to let this season in her life draw her to God for strength for the day, but esp. for His salvation and assurance of Heaven when He calls her home. Thank you that she has a sister who is able to provide a safe place for her. Use this time to draw them closer together in the bond of your love, Father. Amen

I am women’s ministry director and I am also a Public Safety Chaplain for our police and fire departments. It has been a full 3 days. 1. A police officer died, 2. a friend’s mom died and my sister is going through tests with the possibility of lymphoma. Pray for the police officers family and colleagues to seek the Lord, and for those who are Christ followers to demonstrate God’s grace, mercy and comfort to each other and to the officers family. The same would be great for my friend’s family whose faith-filled Mom is in the presence of Jesus. Also for my sister to deepen her trust and dependence on the Lord through this difficult journey of medical tests.
Stacie Martinsen says
Dear Pat,
I will lift you up towards God and his angels, asking them to bless and strengthen the Officer’s family, bless the family of your Mom’s friend, and strengthen your sister during her medical journey. Trust in Him; He will bring all of you through this very difficult time.
Carol says
Patricia, I am praying for you and your kids.
Carol says
Windy, I have prayed for your health as well as for Sabrina’s husband and Kim’s sister. It is such a privilege to be part of holding each other up. I would appreciate your prayers as I was arrested last fall for something I didn’t do. My ex is very vindictive and made accusations that got someone’s attention. I know that I will be free but in the meantime I need prayer for physical and emotional strength, my kids need prayer for peace in their hearts and the voluminous legal fees have tapped everything that we have. Thank you so much.
Vicki says
I often think of this same thing, no way would someone pray for me, I am not worth it, my troubles are small and everyone is so busy. I belong to a women group and just forwarded your message to our leader, wondering how many of the needed prayers do not get asked for? I hoping that she will share it with the group. We all could use some help, prayers and support. Why not ask those close to you, that could really impact both of your lives.
thank you for this message, I will be more willing to share a need now. bless you
Susan H. says
Vicki, I pray that the women in your group will open their hearts to begin to pray even more for each of the other women in your group and through this process, a bond of friendship and love will develop and become stronger as it brings joy to each of your lives.

Renee, I’m the “leader” of prayer warrior women called “Sonshine Sisters” that Vicki wrote about… and I most definitely will be sharing your story with them. We all need wake up calls and this is one! I have challenged them to start their own Prayer Garden, where they can pray in quiet each day spending time with God (sort of like the “War Room” movie). We will pray for your husband and you, knowing that each prayer is heard by Jesus! God bless.

My husband also has liver issues and we have walked through a lot of hard places over the last few years. He is doing good so far but there are times his liver disease rears its ugly head. I guess I never thought of asking others for prayer. I would pray, he would pray, and his mom would pray but that’s the extend of our requests. Thanks for a new perspective ?

Thanks, we appreciate it. Ironically, he got a call from his specialist today with a consultation appointment for an ERCP (liver scope). On top of the unknowns, missed work means no pay. We are looking at one day this month and a few next month. 🙁
