I’m so glad you’re here! Since you found my “About” page, here is a little bit about me:
The most common thing new friends tell me: “Gosh, you’re so down to earth and normal.” Yep, that’s me. I trip and bump into things all the time, forget what I was going to say, rarely wear makeup, live in sweatpants and t-shirts and I only wash my hair one or two times a week. I am not the things God has called me to or allowed me to do. I am just an ordinary woman, daughter, wife, mom, sister and friend who loves Jesus, her family, creating beauty and having fun. I am also a hot mess who has been known to accidentally take my dogs seizure medication and call the fire department, more than once!
I am a cancer survivor with an extensive family history of breast, skin, pancreatic and prostate cancer. My parents divorced when I was two, and they have been divorced 5 times collectively. Both sides of my family have addiction and mental illness. I am a miracle by the grace of God alone. My life is beautiful and hard.
I have three children plus two daughters-in-love: Our son Josh (25) and his wife Brandi, our son Andrew (22) and his wife Hannah Rose, and our daughter Aster (11), who we adopted from Ethiopia when she was baby.
My husband, J.J., is 5 years younger than me and we’ve been married 27 years. We got married in 1993, when he was a junior in college. Our wedding anniversary is September 11th and yes, it’s not been quite the same since 9/11.
In the past twelve months, I was diagnosed with a deadly skin cancer, had surgery to remove it (I’m cancer free now!), got exposed to severe toxic mold three different times and places, got very sick for months and had undiagnosed chronic pain and extreme fatigue that made me want to quit everything. Our 11-year-old daughter was diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, our 15-year old beagle died, our youngest son got married in May 2020 during all the Covid-19 shut downs and my 84-year old mom, who lives three blocks from us, fell twice and had to be rushed to the ER both times.
I write, speak and do ministry from a place of struggle and hope. And I only share those details so you will know you’re not alone in the hard stuff. Also, if you’re looking for Biblical encouragement from woman in the trenches of life who is clinging to Jesus, you’re in the right place!
Here is what my official bio says: Through the power of her story, everyday-life humor and Biblical hope, Renee has encouraged women’s hearts and impacted millions of women’s lives around the world through her radio, speaking and writing ministry for over twenty years. She is an award-winning and best-selling author of A Confident Heart, former executive director and radio co-host at Proverbs 31 Ministries, and writer for (in)Courage, a division of Hallmark and DaySpring
My passion is to encourage and equip women to overcome self-doubt so you can live in the fullness of your God-given season, purpose, gifts, potential, roles and relationships—and empower you with courage and confidence to make a difference right where you are, with what you already have!
If your heart needs encouragement, I hope you will sign up for my email updates. I promise not to share your email or fill your inbox! I will just send a note of encouragement your way every once in a while!
