When my children are going through something difficult I try to find verses that relate to what they are dealing with and weave them into a prayer for them.
In my book, A Confident Mom, I have a chapter on prayer. In it I share the prayers below tohelp us pray over three of the most important areas of our children’s lives, no matter what age or stage they are in.
Guarding Their Hearts
Father, I pray You would help ______________ guard their heart above all else, knowing it will determine the course of her/his life. Give ______________ an awareness of her/his thoughts and remind ______________ to take her/his thoughts captive and make sure they align with and are obedient to Yours. Lord, turn ______________’s eyes from worthless things, and give ____________ life through Your word. (Prov. 4:23 (NLT), 2 Cor. 10:5b,
Ps. 119:37, NLT)
Growing Their Faith
Lord, I pray You would help ______________ trust You with all their heart and lean not on their own understanding. I pray ______________would acknowledge You in all their ways and trust You to make their path straight. Lord, help _____________ to live by faith and not by sight as she/he waits in hope for [You], believing [You] are her/his help and shield. May your unfailing love be with ______________ Lord, as he/she learns how to put her/his hope in You. (Prov 3:5-6, 2 Cor. 5:7, Ps. 33:20, 22).
Guided by God’s Voice
Lord, I pray You would speak to ______________’s heart, and that You give ______________ the ability to recognize Your voice and the desire to listen to and follow You. Show ______________ your ways, Lord, teach ______________ your paths. Guide ______________ in your truth and teach them for you are God [their] Savior. I pray ____________ would put her/his hope in you all day long, and that Your word would be a lamp to their feet and a light to their path. (1 Sam. 3:10, John 10:27, Ps. 25:4–5, Ps. 119:105)
