Telling Ourselves the Truth

Today I want you to meet my sweet and amazing friend Jennifer Rothschild. Jennifer is a wife, mom, national speaker, founder of WomensMinistry.net and author of several books, including “Self-talk, Soul-talk: What to Say When You Talk to Yourself as well as Me, Myself and Lies Bible Study.

She is also speaking with me on the Girls GetAway Cruise in October {and we’d love for you to join us!! – more details below}. For now, turn up your volume, click on the arrow and join us for some girl-talk:

Jennifer’s points really are worth remembering, and obviously I need to write them down. So, here is what she encouraged us to do with the not-so-encouraging words we sometimes say to ourselves.
  • Recognize – Recognize if your self-talk matches up with God’s thoughts.
  • Refuse – Refuse any self-talk that is not consistent with God’s words.
  • Re-phrase – Re-phrase negative thoughts to align with scripture. Tell yourself the TRUTH, and nothing but God’s truth!

When we take these 3 steps, God begins to erase negative self-talk and lies. Speaking of erasers, Jennifer needed one that morning. Before we met, she bent over to pick something up, and hit her eye on the edge of the desk. {Cringe} She had a video shoot that afternoon, and a lovely black eye. So, I whipped out what I call my “magic eraser” makeup and covered it up. Look. You cannot even see the deep dark purple mark under her eye.

So, what is my “magic eraser”? It’s Maybelline’s Eraser Treatment MakeUp, and it’s only $7.99! Today’s your chance to win some, along with Jennifer’s book:

  1. What a great video! Thanks for sharing it with us today. I shared via twitter & already subscribe to your email updates.

I have so enjoyed the Confident Heart study. Today my goal is to finish up ch 11 :-).

  2. Jennifer, thank you for this terrific advice on how to get rid of negative thoughts and words that don’t line up with God’s words for me. And Renee, thank you for providing so many positive scriptures throughout this book, the printable resources, and the free 7-day Doubt Diet as ammunition against the negative comments of the world. As women, we seem to be the target of so much criticism and guilt-tripping. However, God wants to strengthen us and give us confidence in every way. This has been a wonderful study and I’ll definitely be revisiting this book!

    • wonderful video! really enjoyed seeing it. you and Jennifer are a wonderful encouragement to people.

  3. Janet F says:

I love Jennifer, I have seen her on many TV shows and have always loved her positive attitude!! You are a blessing Jennifer!!! What an awesome mom you have, love these points:
Recognize – Recognize if your self-talk matches up with God’s thoughts.
Refuse – Refuse any self-talk that is not consistent with God’s words.
Re-phrase – Re-phrase negative thoughts to align with scripture. Tell yourself the TRUTH, and nothing but God’s truth!
Thanks for sharing with us Jennifer and Renee!! ♥ to you both!!

I posted on FB and twitter

  4. Buffered on Twitter!
I’ve got to get better at this! 🙂

  5. “Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love” (Ephesians 4:11-16 NLT).

We grow everyday through God’s word, through encouraging, God-based, word-based teachings, through God’s love and direction…I love this study. Thanks Renee. (My husband has even been reading the book and I see growth and change.) It is an exciting time…

(I also would like to enter this give away)

  6. Sonya S says:

I would love to read Jennifer’s book. I sometimes catch myself having negative thoughts about myself. Shared this via Facebook.

  7. Thank you for these wonder thoughts.
Please enter me in the give away!

  8. Renee, you and Jennifer are such blessings. I recently read A Confident Heart and loved it. Your mp3s and printables have been so encouraging. I love Jennifer and saw her speak at a Women of Faith event a few years ago. She is perfectly lovely. Thank you for helping us erase of not so pretty stuff.

  9. Thank you for sharing this information. I find so often that I know God’s truth, I know what I should do and within minutes negative feelings begin to convince me differently. The bible verse “Satan desires to have you and is waiting and crouching at your door, but you must master it.” from Genesis 4:6-7. This is a daunting task, but we must continually walk with Jesus and let his thoughts fill our minds.

  10. I would love Jennifer’s book. This is the one thing I have really tried to work on during this study is to train my thoughts to God’s and not the negative that I usually do. Lately satan has been right there to tell me the negative its been a battle these past 2 weeks. But thankful God’s word is true.
I shared this on facebook and by email.
    Thank you

  11. Sarah Brubaker says:

I shared on my facebook page and I already receive your email updates 🙂 thanks for this encouragement!

  12. Jennifer I love the inspiring three R’s. It is very easy to remember and a great way to keep our thoughts focus and on Christ’s word. Renee I am already signed up for your email updates and love them. Have a wonderful and awesome day ladies. Thanks for all you do.

  13. Angela Huneault says:

I want to say THANK YOU, for sharing this today. I have fwd it to a few friends that I know have been struggling these last few days with ” words” people have used. Making our situations feel even harder. We know that God is in control and will use all of this for His glory. I will say it is hurting right now but we know to just walk with Him.

  14. Courtney says:

Awesome message, Jennifer! It’s a great reminder of no matter of your circumstances, past, disabilities, etc., you can still move on! You’re not defined by your circumstances, but how you over come them. And it is so important to recognize, refuse, and rephrase negative talk. God sees us as love, hope, and triumph; not failures and disappointment. It is so critical we study His truths and believe it.

I shared today’s message on twitter!
I pray it blesses my followers like it has blessed me!

Thank you and God bless! 🙂

  15. Renee, thank you for sharing this message from Jennifer! This study has been wonderful, and I will be recommending it to numerous friends. I look forward to continuing encouraging discussion this summer.

I think that some of the most important things that I have gotten from your study and chat have been (really, there are so many wonderful things that it is hard to distill down to a few):

    1) Healing is a process. And emotional and spiritual healing can be a longer, harder process than physical healing because the causes and depths of the injury can stay hidden for a long time.

    2) God can handle that, and through Christ, so can I!

    3) Healing is a CHOICE ~ God is waiting to heal me, but I must choose daily to allow Him access to my heart, to trust Him.

    4) I have to CHOOSE what I am going to listen to, think about, say to myself; and the choices I make in this area will greatly impact my healing, either for good, if I choose God’s truth, or for bad, if I choose to listen to the lies of the world, my own heart or the enemy.

Thank you for all of the scripture that you have woven throughout your message. In fact, the truth of God’s word is your message. I shared today’s post on fb, as I have numerous others of your posts, and I am already on your email list 🙂

God bless you, Renee, and all of the sisters who have been guest post-ers, and those who have shared their hearts in this study the past couple of months.

    • Becky,

You are already defeating the enemy with amazingly powerful thoughts like these. Way to go!

Renee’s words and support have been amazingly timed and perfect in many ways. Reading your words, Renee is like sitting and chatting over coffee with my best friend. So naturally and poignantly penned.

Thank-you, I look forward to continually receiving your emails and have shared with my sister your link.

  16. Just the other day I looked into the mirror and told myself how STUPID and UGLY I was! It took an entire day to get over that and the emotions I had encountered. I haven’t felt that way in a long time. In fact, I was shocked those kinds of emotions were able to creep back up. However, I have the tools to and the confidence to FIX it. So very thankful for your book and the God timing of it all. 🙂

    • I just wanted to share a verse that came on my heart when I read your comment. God loves you and always remember we are created in his image. Have a blessed day.

      Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

  17. Also, I shared today’s website on twitter.

  18. hi Renee…thank you for your blog!i shared with some friends who are in a healing process now… thank you and God bless!!

  19. Thank you for your words. I posted this on facebook.

  20. Shared on Facebook! I have read Self Talk, Soul Talk & bought an extra copy & shared with my best friend. She also loved the book. Would love to have another copy to share. Have been subscribed to your emails & look forward to them

  21. Susan Whitaker says:

Renee, I shared the link on my facebook page. I have many christian friends whom I think will enjoy reading this link. Thank you. I also am very interested in reading Jennifer’s books. I also want you to know that A Confident Heart was my first online Bible study and I have really been enjoying it! Thank you!

  22. What a good study – one I needed to hear. Thank you Jennifer for the encouragement and the 3 R’s!. I am getting better but I still hold on too much to what people say about me and how they see me. I volunteered to hold devotions where I work and I plan to share from your book, Renee. The more I read it, the more it will sink in and become second nature. I have your book on my Kindle so it is easy for me to revisit Chapter 12 and other highlights to feed on God’s truth! I hope you host a summer lesson! I am already subscribed to your emails!

  23. Thank you! Shared this on Facebook and emailed my sister.

  24. Hi Girls

WOW I love both of your stories, and I am looking forward to meeting you both in October on the cruise. My mom spoke for me when I was 15 I had my mouth wired shout as I had my bottom jaw brought forward, and I could not speak for 6 weeks. One day my older sister came upstairs wearing my brand new shirt that I had not even worn yet, and I make noise and got my moms attention, back then I had a chalk board I could write on, so I told he the my sister could not wear that shirt as it was mine, so my mom told my sister to take it off and not touch anything that was not hers. Still to this day I loved that my mom stood up for me, she is my rock. My parents always told us girls, the world is your oyster, do what God has given you to do. I have been an accountant since I was 20, now as I turned 48 and reflect on all the people I have helped with my book keeping skills, I am thankful God has lead me in this direction. I have been the treasurer for our church for 8 years and I love it.

See both of you in a few months and thank you for sharing your stories today.

I finished A Confident Heart, I have always had confidence in God all my life.
    Barb

  25. Hi Renee,

I would love a chance at this giveaway. I have posted the link to my facebook and I have subcribed to your e-mails, a while back. Thank you for your encouragement and support.

  26. Laura M. says:

I enjoyed today’s message. I struggle constantly with negative self-talk and taking things others say about me way too personally. It would be wonderful to have the book to read! In all honesty, I don’t want the gift card. Target supports gay pride festivals and other gay causes so I have chosen not to shop there anymore. Not any easy choice because I like Target, but one God convicted me to make. Blessings to you Renee and Jennifer and please contiue the encouraging messages! You are making more positive impact than you know!!

    • Laura, I have a difficult time with negative self talk and taking things too personally also.
What others think of me and say of me eat me up some days….so you are not alone.
I have to constantly remind myself what God thinks/says about me!
About a 1000 times a day honestly. I am getting better about believing it!
Renee’s bible study has a been a huge step in helping me realize that, and find some relief.
I don’t know about you, but I need to be reminded daily!
Thank you for being honest! Bless you!

      • Laura M. says:

Em thank you so much for your response and encouragment!!
Without going into details, I am going through some really tough stuff right now. You’re words brought me to tears, but that’s okay because that’s God’s healing. I really needed to read your words and be reminded that I’m not alone. That’s another lie, that your alone and no one cares. And yes, I too need to be reminded daily (and sometimes it feels like every minute of the day) of what God thinks/says about me. I have been trying read Renee’s book and do the study, but “things” keep getting in the way of it. That must mean I really need to read it! God bless you for being sensitive to HIs leading in responing to me!!

  27. Heather says:

I shared this post on Facebook and I am currently subscribed to get your emails. Enter me in the giveaway , please!

  28. Loved the video. Have been down for a couple of days, and I really needed to hear that. The Confident Heart bible study has helped SO MUCH in battling negative thoughts and doubts. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  29. Jackie lemons says:

Thanks for your encouraging words! I shared with a friend through email!!!

  30. Michelle says:

shared on FB and already get your e-mails. 🙂

  31. Thank you Renee and Jennifer for this great video, it’s amazing what negative words can do to us, to our children. I have written the 3 R’s down and will carry them in my purse, and in my heart…there are so many unhappy people in the world and say so many negative things to us, I have made it a point to just close my eyes and pray for them, we need to be equiped with God’s word and the three R’s always. Through this study I have grown so much and I am now able to process negativity, more positively with God’s word. I have been telling my daughters about this study and it has had a positive impact in my home with my husband and my children. I feel so blessed.

I gave this book to my older daughter when I stared the study, she started it and then stopped, but has started it again three days ago, she is approaching chapter four again (where she stopped last time), Please pray that she will continue this time and find as much peace and I know I and alot of sisters have.

I posted the link on my facebook timeline and emailed it to six ladies on my email contact list.

    Recognize – Refuse and Re-phrase…Amen

Psalm 139:14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.

God bless all of you beautiful sisters, we are blessed to be God’s Masterpiece..

    Anna

  32. Thank you Renee and Jennifer for the inspirational message in this video. I have posted a link via my blog: http://www.womeninchristourking.blogspot.com so others may enjoy it as well.

    Patricia

  33. I praise and thank God for having spoken to me through you, Jennifer and Renee. 🙂

Renee, your book has always been a source of encouragement and enlightenment to me. It’s definitely one of a kind. Looking forward to reading more of you. 🙂

Jennifer, you have always been an inspiration and a God-given example worth emulating. Your God-inspired outlook in life motivates me to always regard my blindness not as a burden to carry and to worry about, but as a blessing to share and to thank the Lord for.

I will treasure in my heart the 3 R’s, and commit to Recognize my thoughts that don’t align with God’s thoughts, Refuse self-talk that doesn’t agree with what God says, and Re-phrase negative self-condemning thoughts with God-centered and “God-fident” truths. That’s exactly what I need to be reminded of and to live by every single day.

I’m so blessed that I can’t keep myself from sharing the link to this wonderful post with my Facebook and Twitter pals!

It is also my honor to be subscribed to the mailing list.

Keep it up, dear sisters in Christ. 🙂 You are blessed and loved. May you never rest in serving our great God.

  34. Jessica says:

I have emailed a few of my friends that deal with these negative thoughts. I am so guilty of doing it myself and is so encouraging to read this and see the video. I hope that over time I am able to “erase” these negative thoughts and replace them with God’s truths.

  35. Susan G says:

What an encouraging woman and message. I ‘found’ Jennifer several months ago online and was so encouraged by her message of ‘self talk’. I still need to buy her book “Self Talk, Soul Talk”, which I perused. Her message reminds me so much of your book, Renee, A Confident Heart. Of telling yourself the truths about what God says about us, and not listening to the lies of the enemy. I will put her 3-word self-talk process in my memory bank, and incorporate it along with all the great truths I’ve learned from A Confident Heart!
I am emailing this to my daughter!
Much love and thankfulness to you both!

  36. nancys1128 says:

  45. Holly Wert says:
  46. Linda S. Aranda says:

I never was told the positive words in my life and now I know that I have to believe that God really loves me and wants me to know that. I am working at saying what God says about me and I am starting to realize more and more that when those thoughts come, I can speak what God says about me and take authority over the negative words in my life. I love what you all said on the video. Thank you for sharing and helping us to see that we all have a purpose and that I can be who God says I am.

  47. I shared the link on Facebook and already receive the email updates.

I appreciate the reminder about self-talk because it is one of the areas I really struggle with. It is something I have to continually work on. I like the idea of using the 3 R’s: Recognize, Refuse, Re-phrase.

  48. I shared this on my Facebook account. I tend to have a lot of negative self talk. Most of mine stem from thinking that others do not truly care about me. I know that the root is being sexually abused as a young girl. It is amazing, IF we do not turn those areas of our lives over to God they will haunt us for years. That has been over 40 years ago and I am still effected today. Perhaps others can share on how to let go of the negative self talk. THank you so much for sharing.

  49. Lena Wike says:

I shared the video on Twitter. I tried to share on Facebook but couldn’t for some reason. Thank you and God bless you.

  63. Thomas Morrow says:

This morning you talked about a woman viewing herself with god’s eyes. You suggested that our women should accept the complements they receive from their husbands/boyfriends. HOW I AGREE. My wife and I were married a little over 25 years ago. When we married, she was thin and beautiful. Now, after 5 children (four girls and one boy), she isn’t as thin as she was then and there are some giggly bits but her beauty is more amazing now then it was then. She is a great mom and educator. I find myself staring at her sometime and marveling at how beautiful she is. I’m proud to have her on my arm and at my side. There was a time when she poo-poo’d my complements and told me how I was wrong. “Look at me,” she would say. I would respond, “I am and I like what I see.” I’ve never stopped and now she thanks me whenever I tell her how pretty she is, something I do almost every day.
If you truly listen to your husband’s complements and he is a good man who understand how important it is for his wife to feel loved, you may start to see yourself with god’s eyes. I believe god helps me see my wife with his eyes — even thought it is not necessary given how pretty she is.
By the way, she really is pretty — just ask me.

    • Thank you so much for sharing this, Thomas. God bless you richly! We could say the same about our husbands. As I put on weight, I realize that I am the same person, big or small and the same for my husband. I love him dearly and would rather he lose the weight for his sake. May we all age with grace and love one another greatly and deeply as our Heavenly Father loves us!

    • Thank you Thomas. Your post makes me wish more men could peak in to the hearts of their wives and know just how much their words mean. You are a good man and a gift to your beautiful wife!!!

  64. Hi Everyone

Thank you for these powerful and encouraging words. My last child graduated from high school and I am struggling with what is next for me. This reminds me of God’s truths and how important for me to examine my self-talk in light of His truth.

  68. Shirley says:

Thank you for sharing the video. Jennifer is amazing in sharing the lord. She gives me encouragement every time I hear Her. I am enjoying your book and study especially the word of the week.

  69. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with ladies, to help us all with negative talk we do to ourselves! We can be pretty mean to ourselves. This has been a time of refreshment of confidence to my heart and soul.
It is so freeing to be confident in WHO I am IN Christ….a time of getting some of that confidence from head “knowledge” to heart knowledge:)! Thank you, and I look forward to e-mail updates, as I’ve already signed up!

  70. I really enjoyed both the videos of the interview with Jennifer. She is an amazing woman who has not let her disabilities rob her of life. What a testimony to God’s grace! It is encouraging to see how God is using her through this trial and gives us the encouragement to “Press forward” in our Christian walk. We are God’s wonderful creation and it is our connection to Him that gives us worth. May the Lord bless you, Jennifer and you, Renee as you minister to so many woman. I can only put this in an e-mail as I am not on twitter or facebook.

Shared on facebook…I needed this today. Been haunted by some hurtful words of others all day. I will be practicing the three R’s from here on out! Thank you!

  75. Renee and Jennifer~

Thank you so much for this video. I have had an insecurity problem all my life (I’m now 47). I find it so difficult to not take other peoples comments so seriously. I can get 10 compliments but focus on the one negative comment someone said. I will really try and incorporate your 3 R’s into my life. Thanks for your words of wisdom. I really needed this!

  76. Thanks so much for all your do. You are an inspiration. (I did both, btw)

  77. Donna D. says:

Several years ago someone in the church spoke hurtful words to me. For awhile I let them in and they really did damage inside of me. Through my prayer time with the Lord I heard him speak to my heart these words, “Do not receive what I did not intend for you to receive!’ That statement changed everything for me. I no longer accepted those hurtful words because they were not true in the first place. I love who God says I am and that is what I have chosen to believe. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…. I love that verse! Praise God for His goodness shown towards me!

  78. Beautiful video. Words that I needed to hear even years ago as a little girl. I didn’t have those kind words from my mother – until I went into foster care – just wasn’t always the same.
The Lord, though changed the way I have thought about my mother and helped me be a better mom to my girls.
Thank you, can’t wait to see what we are doing for the summer.
Never forget that you Renee, are in my prayers. The LORD, will bless you and your family.

    Have a blessed day!!

  79. I so needed to hear this. I felt bombarded by negative self-chatter, so much that I felt like curling up & hiding from it. Now I can use the three R’s to quiet or maybe even eliminate the chatter!

  80. Great message! I really need this today. Yesterday was a day full of negative self chatter and thankfully between yesterdays devotion on Proverbs 31 and your book, I was able to turn to God’s words and promises to help me not be a total mess. I am so thankful to have a list of God’s promises now because that is something that I had been searching for so I can know them, memorize them, and turn to them when I am beating myself up. Thanks, Renee and please know your I am praying for your family.

Thank you Renee for sharing the Video, so needed to see that today. I am enjoying the study tremendously and would you believe that I have had so many distractions thorough out the study from Satan almost not wanting me to continue, but I fight back these attacks with scripture and prayer, all negative thought’s and words disappear through positive scripture. We are VICTOURIOS through Christ. Praying for you and your family…God Bless you!

  82. Thank you, Renee, for sharing so much of your life and the lives of your friends. It’s always a blessing to be able to identify with someone who has been through some of the same difficulties. Through this study I have been able to admit that I’m not “fine” and that I need prayer and encouragement to get through the difficult times. While driving to the grocery store, I was encouraged by one song (I’ll Take You Back, Lift Me Up, Your Love Never Fails) after another. Matthew West’s song “Hello, My Name Is……Child of the One True King” brought tears. When I start to have negative thoughts while driving, I love to tune into a Christian station and hear God’s promises through music. My prayers are with you and your family.

  83. oh how gracious is our Father!! How much He knows we need encouragement! I just can never say thank you enough for all you have & continue to share Renee! Like apples of gold in settings of silver…. 😀
I shared this “triple R” link to encouragement will all my friends on facebook.
I just so needed this post this week, am very discouraged and feeling under attack. Seems like I struggle just to put one foot in front of the other, on so many levels right now.

  84. Thats good. had to ring a friend today, with a “I don’t want to live the rest of my life on my own” to which she said that, that’s not true because God is with me and she sent me a text (after i lost the phone conection) with Psalm 34: 18 ” The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit ” I wish it was always that straight forward to just pick up the phone, say “____” , and the truth just played back with a verse of encouragement!
I tried to share the video on facebook but I couldn’t.

  85. just watched jennifer’s video on self talk, soul talk and managed to share that. Thanks for sharing and being such an inspiration to others.

  86. Susan G says:

Thank you for another video. Thank you for your book A Confident Heart. I am learning so much about myself. I am learning something in every chapter.

  88. Chelsea says:

    Renee,
Thank you, again, for your transparency. Your story keeps touching my heart and this study has truly erased some of the black marks on my heart. Thank you and God bless.
    Chelsea

  89. Thank you for sharing the video, words-what we need to learn to use well from an early age. now to get practicing thinking and speaking the true words that God intended for me. thank you for this study, it has been great and I needed it.

  90. I did not hear such encouraging words as the two of you did from your mothers when I was growing up. I try as often as I can to make sure speak I them to my daughters and son. Thank you Jennifer for that reminder that we do have a choice and do not have to accept the negative things people say to and about us. I am so thankful we have a God who, loves us and calls us His own.
Thank you Renee for this study. It has been such a blessing and am sorry to see it end!

  91. Debbie Jo says:

The (3) R’s….what a great tool….I know I will use them next time my self talks negative stuff to me….
    -Recognize
    -Refuse
    -Rephrase

    Thank you!

  92. Thank you for this sweet video and message! Something I needed to hear and I really appreciate it! I will be on the cruise in October and look forward to seeing both of y’all! Very exciting!!

  93. This is a great word and so needed today! Many of us are bombarded with negatives in our families, jobs and everyday lives and being able to recognize, refuse and rephrase these negative thoughts, words and deeds is crucial to walking out our journey with Christ. God is right beside us. He hears us and knows exactly what we need. He wants us to know and always remember that what He says about us is the truth, the gospel and all that we need to focus on! Thank you Renee and Jennifer for the word, the reminders and being obedient to God and following His will by sharing with all of us. God bless you both!

  94. Posters have raised many interesting and plausible poiiibslstes denied us by the blackout. I tend to favor the radioactive Eurabian concession business. It does not seem this ship was equipped for the process of explosive dispersal, but substantial explosive ordinance is not necessary to create tremendous exposive power in a tanker. Nearly emtpty grain silos are incredibly explosive, as well as fuel tanks.
